Hunza and Skardu are the two most famous destinations in Gilgit-Baltistan. Both offer giant mountains, clear lakes and warm hospitality, but they feel very different. If you only have time for one, this guide will help you choose. And if you can, we will show you how to see both.
Hunza at a Glance
Hunza is a narrow, dramatic valley along the Karakoram Highway, surrounded by peaks such as Rakaposhi, Ultar Sar and Ladyfinger. It is famous for its terraced orchards, the ancient Baltit and Altit Forts, the turquoise Attabad Lake, the Passu Cones and the road to the Khunjerab Pass on the China border.

Skardu at a Glance
Skardu is the capital of Baltistan, set in a wide valley where the Indus is joined by rivers from the high Karakoram. It is the gateway to K2 and the Baltoro Glacier, and feels more open and spacious, with sand dunes, alpine lakes and high plateaus.

- Best seasons: May to October, with Deosai usually open from June to September
Scenery
Hunza offers close-up views of towering peaks right above the villages, with green terraces against rock and ice. Skardu offers wide horizons, calm lakes and the unique combination of sand dunes and snowy mountains in the Shigar cold desert. Both are spectacular, so it comes down to whether you prefer dramatic valleys or open landscapes.
Culture and History
Hunza is home to the Burusho and Wakhi people, and its forts tell the story of the old Mirs of Hunza and the Silk Road. Baltistan’s Balti culture has strong Tibetan roots, visible in the architecture of Khaplu Palace, Shigar Fort and the centuries-old Chaqchan Mosque. Culture lovers will enjoy both.

- Hunza: fort visits, village walks, boating on Attabad Lake, the Hussaini suspension bridge, Khunjerab Pass, and treks such as Rakaposhi Base Camp and Rush Lake in neighboring Nagar
- Skardu: lake visits, the Deosai jeep safari, desert dunes, palace stays in Khaplu, and the starting point for K2 and Concordia treks
Getting There
Both are reached from Islamabad. By road, Hunza is usually two days away via the Karakoram Highway, and Skardu is about the same via Chilas and the Skardu road. There are flights from Islamabad to both Gilgit (for Hunza) and Skardu, but mountain flights are weather dependent, so always keep a flexible plan.
Which One Should You Choose?
- Choose Hunza if you love culture, photography and dramatic peaks, or if you are visiting in blossom or autumn season.
- Choose Skardu if you prefer lakes, wide landscapes, relaxing resorts and adventures like the Deosai Plains.
- Families and honeymooners enjoy both. Skardu’s lake resorts and Hunza’s cozy boutique hotels are equally popular.
